Damn near every one-sided short pip penholder served long & fast, to get into that topspin rally. That being said, some players are fine with serving long. Some players start standing very close to the table, but that's usually because they're looking to flick the serve (or are very good close to the table with blocks & drives) It makes it difficult for the opponent to determine how they want to play the point, as they don't "know" their starting position. It's VERY obvious with traditional penholders Ryu Seung Min & Ma Lin stand SUPER far to one side, and then step into position once the ball is thrown. They'll serve long as variation, but only if they think the opponent is not prepared for it.Īs for the positioning thing, that's why a lot of players stand further back from the table & then step in once they see its not a long, fast serve. It lets the server get into the point & run their gameplan with a LOT lower risk. It's not that "short > long," but a short serve cannot be attacked as easily or as powerfully.

That's why professional players serve short. Whoever loops first controls that point, and unless you can counterloop like Aruna Quadri you're then going to be fighting uphill for that point. Doesn't really matter what kind of spin is on the ball (side top, side back, heavy backspin, no spin), if its long a competent player will be able to loop it.
